Georges Pogedaieff (Russian, 1897-1971)

  • Georges Pogedaieff was a Russian painter, graphic artist, illustrator, and scenographer and costume designer. He began his training in Russia but left the country in 1920. He lived and worked in theatres in Bucharest, Prague, Berlin and Vienna, then finally settled in Paris in 1925. Up to the late 1930s, most of Pogedaieff’s work centred around theatre production and includes many costume sketches, set designs and posters. In his later life, the artist distanced himself from the theatre, focusing instead on painting, drawing and illustration. In the mid-1950s Pogedaieff initiated the restoration of the Chapelle Notre-dame Des Grâces in Ménerbes (Provence) and painted seven large-scale panels for the altar.
