Václav Vojtech Novák (Czech, 1901-1969)

  • Václav Vojtech Novák was a Czech painter. From 1919 to 1926 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where he was taught by Vratislav Nechleba, Vlaho Bukovac, and Max Pirner. He travelled widely around Europe and studied in Paris where he became acquainted with the works of French modern artists, including André Derain, Henri Matisse, and Raoul Dufy. He also drew inspiration for his work from his travels through England, Belgium, and Italy.

    The main body of his artistic legacy is made of landscapes depicting the Czech countryside and mountains, however, he also enjoyed painting still lifes and portraits.

    In 1927 Novák became a member of Umělecká Beseda (Czech Artists’ Forum) and Skupina 58 (Group 58).
