Jun Dobashi (Japanese, 1910-1975)

  • Having been a member of the influential Shinjuki group in Japan, Jun Dobashi gained critical acclaim in Paris, exhibiting at important avant-garde salons – Salons d'Automne, Salon de Mai and Salon des Comparaisons – and important École de Paris and avant-garde exhibitions at Galerie Charpentier and Galerie Fricker. Born in Japan, Dobashi studied art in Tokyo before spending a year in Paris, studying at Ranson Academy in 1938-1939. This was the beginning of a deep connection of the artist with the city leading to him living in Paris permanently from 1953 to 1969. His style is abstract and draws inspiration from the European Art Informel movement. Dobashi is known not just as a painter, but also as a lithographer and engraver. In 1961 the artist held a solo show at Redfern Gallery in London, which became a turning point in his career. Jun Dobashi went on to establish an international reputation, exhibiting in many group shows throughout Europe and America.
