Michael Kidner RA (English, 1917-2009)

  • In the mid-1960s, Michael Kidner was a pioneer of Op art. He began to shape his personal style after his encounters with American Abstract Expressionism and Bauhaus ideas. His fascination with science, mathematics and theories of chaos developed into a unique visual language that is both logical and playful.

Important teaching positions, many honours, one-man exhibitions in the United Kingdom, Eastern Europe, Brazil, Austria, and Scandinavia, as well as global group shows were among the highlights of his illustrious career. A retrospective at the Serpentine in 1984 introduced his work to a new generation of British artists. In 2004 Michael Kidner was elected Royal Academician.
