Gillian Ayres’s distinctive canvases from the 1980s burst with joyous colour. Archival footage of Ayres working in these often large-scale paintings shows the full-body experience of painting. Often during this time she used her hands in place of a brush, the texture the hand leaves in the paint is unmistakable. Marks of her fingers are also evident in the purple marks in the upper right, a handprint of the artist.
