Gabriel Weissmann (English, 1944-1997)

  • Weissmann, born in 1944 in London, developed an interest in painting at a young age by appreciating the work of modern painters such as Picasso, Klee, Kandinsky and Pollock. From 1963 to 1967, he trained at Chelsea College of Arts.

In the mid-sixties, he became famous for a series of LSD paintings he created while under the influence of the drug. He painted 'Brain Drain' in 1966, which is considered one of the greatest representations of the psychedelic period. The piece was part of the travelling exhibition The Sixties: France and Great Britain 1960-1973, in Paris in 1996 and Brighton in 1997.
